Adolescents, Culture and Theatre: A Contemporary Korean Perspective
Talk by Dr. Hwang, Ha Young (School of Drama, Korea National University of Arts)
This session aims to look at youth culture in the contemporary Korean context and how theatre – particularly Theatre for Young Audiences – attempts to engage with and respond to it by interacting with young people through diverse collaborative projects. Paying attention to the notion of adolescents (Cheongsonyeon in Korean) and its implications to the socio-cultural context of Korea, it will illustrate some cases of Theatre for Young Audiences, which explore ways to connect with the perceptions of Korean adolescents in the creative process of making theatre. This is to lead to suggesting a dimension of contemporary Korean theatre as a socially engaged performance practice. Co-presented by NYU's Department of East Asian Studies and The Korean Cultural Center New York.
